ANZPAC Plastics Pact

What is the ANZPAC Plastics Pact?

ANZPAC stands for the Australian New Zealand and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact. It is a platform for committed and ambitious governments and organisations leading the transition towards a circular economy for plastic packaging. The Pact is inspired by a shared vision of a circular economy where plastic never becomes waste or pollution. ANZPAC is joining a mighty team of over 1000+ organisations united as part of the Ellen MaCarthur Foundation’s Plastics Pact Network – a fortified global collaboration enabling knowledge sharing, innovation, investment and co-ordinated actions across the globe. This is the first Plastic Pact in the Oceania Region with other pacts across Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America.

Why is plastic waste a problem?

In Australia, only 18% of all plastic packaging is recovered for future use. In New Zealand 42% of recyclable plastic containers are sent to landfill. In the Pacific Islands, over 300,000 tonnes of waste plastic is generated every year. We are in dire need of large scale change, waste production is still on an upward trajectory and unsustainable production is continuing at an alarming rate.

Plastic waste is causing havoc on our environment. Single-use plastics or plastics that are not recycled properly end up in our landfills, natural environment and oceans having detrimental effects on wildlife, marine life and the ozone layer.

According to the ANZPAC website, “if we fail to act now, by 2040, the volume of plastic on the market will double, the annual volume of plastic entering the ocean will almost triple and ocean plastic stocks will quadruple”.

What are the goals?

  1. To eliminate unnecessary and problematic packaging through redesign, innovation and alternative (reuse) delivery models.
  2. 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025
  3. Increase the current volume of plastic packaging collected and effectively recycled by at least 25% for each geography within the ANZPAC region.
  4. Average of 25% recycled content in plastic packaging across the region.

Planet Protectors Commitment

At Planet Protector Packaging we are in a race to become the market leader in sustainable thermal packaging that doesn’t harm the planet!

We are fully committed to seeing the ANZPAC Plastics Pact reach all of its goals and more.  All our packaging components are either recyclable or compostable!

Our Innovative WOOLPACK is made from waste wool that is scoured and felted, then lined with a recyclable food grade HDPE film which can be recycled at your local REDcycle in Australia or Soft Plastics NZ in New Zealand. Wool keeps the sheep warm in winter and cool in summer! It is an amazing natural thermal insulator which can outperform polystyrene and is fully home-compostable, providing a sustainable alternative which is much needed in order to reach plastic waste reduction goals.

At Planet Protector we are passionate about sustainability and nurturing our precious earth!  We are excited by the progress the ANZPAC Plastics Pact signifies and look forward to seeing real change.
