Blackmores leads the industry in sustainable practices

The challenge

Aligning with its sustainability mission and pledge to Net Zero by 2030, Blackmores needed a circular packaging solution that would reduce its impact on the planet.

Planet Protector’s solution

With our wool-based and compostable WOOLPACK, Blackmores has lowered its carbon footprint significantly and diverted huge amounts of waste from landfill. It maintains its products in pristine condition while leading the industry in sustainable practices.

Introducing Blackmores

Blackmores is Australia’s leading natural health company. Recognising that you can’t have healthy people without a healthy planet, it is strongly committed to embedding sustainability across the business and giving back to the communities in which it operates.

Blackmore’s challenge: to stay aligned with sustainability goals

Aligned with its mission to connect people to nature, Blackmores has set ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving Net Zero by 2030. Despite this commitment, the company faced a challenge that undermined its environmental objectives – the use of polystyrene, a single-use packaging material made from non-renewable fossil fuels.

29% of Blackmore’s value chain emissions were linked to packaging and freight, so switching packaging was a crucial step in advancing the company’s Net Zero goal. Recognising the urgency of addressing this issue, Blackmores sought a sustainable and high-performing thermal packaging solution to replace polystyrene. Enter WOOLPACK – our compostable packaging solution that proved to be the ideal choice.

The result: immense decrease in emissions and waste

The adoption of WOOLPACK has propelled Blackmores closer to its sustainability targets. By embracing our wool-based, compostable solution, Blackmores has lowered its carbon footprint and diverted huge amounts of waste from landfill. It has seen a 22% improvement in waste diversion from landfill and a reduction of 13% in total waste generated. This has reduced the generation of waste per unit of product by 15%.

Beyond waste reduction, WOOLPACK’s flat-packed structure has led to a reduction in freight emissions, addressing a substantial part of Blackmores’ carbon footprint linked to packaging and transportation. The company’s dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in the 40% reduction in total emissions (from the 2020 baseline).

With WOOLPACK, Blackmores maintains the quality of its temperature-sensitive products and reduces its carbon footprint. By taking concrete actions to reduce its impact on the environment, Blackmores sets a powerful example for the health industry.
