Dr Garth Carnaby

Physicist Garth Carnaby is one of Planet Protector’s key advisers.

The talented Dr. Carnaby has played a leading role in the development of superstar wool technology all over the world. He spent twenty years as a research scientist at the Wool Research Organisation of NZ (WRONZ), and in 1979 he brainstormed his brilliant first invention – the WRONZ Needle. The groundbreaking technology that tufts wool yarn into carpets is still used across the globe to this very day.

After spending 12 years as the Director of WRONZ, Garth started his own company, and now consults with a wide variety of wool companies and research bodies, helping companies (including us!) invent and commercialise industrial technologies.

The former World President of the Textile Institute (UK) served as Chair of the Marsden Fund, NZ’s premier research funding body and was also peer-appointed as the 47th President of the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Dr Carnaby received the Fiber Society’s (USA) Distinguished Achievement Award for his research on carpet properties back in 1990, and in 2006 was made a member of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to the wool industry.

And in 2018, Dr Garth Carnaby was made a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to science and governance.

Yeah, we know. He’s pretty impressive!
